September 29, 2014: Neon Jack Update 1

This is an evolution of what I demo'ed at the Oculus Connect conference. It's still an early demo, but there's plenty more gameplay ... and Oculus Rift DK2 support! See below for a list of new features. It works on a monitor, so if you don't have a Rift, you can still play. That said, mouse-targeting is currently pretty hard. It's much easier to look-target in VR.

New Features:

  • DK2 Support
  • New low-walled track
  • AI racers (they just go as fast as possible)
  • Shooting / Combat (you can shoot AIs, but they currently don't shoot back)
  • Look to target in VR mode. Shoot where you look
  • Cockpit mockup
  • Moved HUD indicators to cockpit
  • ... and I'm sure I've forgotten something, so just play it!

Controls:

  • Brake, Reverse: Xbox L-Trigger, S key, down arrow key
  • Throttle: Xbox R-Trigger, W key, up arrow key
  • Steer L/R: Xbox L-Thumbstick, A/S keys, left/right arrow keys
  • Shoot: Xbox R-Shoulder, Xbox A button, Left-Ctrl key, Mouse L-click
  • Target: Look around in VR mode, or mouse movement in No VR mode
  • Restart race / Reset view: 0 (zero)

Please realize that there are a bunch of known problems and even some obviously broken features. At this early stage of development I'd rather get the game in front of people, warts and all, than lose the habit of shipping.


September 22, 2014: Cockpit, AI Racers, and Look-Targeting

Here's a new screen-shot. I've got a cockpit mockup (mockpit?) as well as some AI racers. The AIs are pretty dumb -- they just give'er and slide around the track walls. But ... it took 30 min instead of days. Being able to pull up beside another vehicle and look out the side of the cockpit already adds something. The track was laid out in a runtime track editor, although that's not ready for general use yet.

July 30, 2014: DK2s Have Arrived!

Oculus Rift DK2s have arrived! All that running to the door at the slightest noise, and the UPS guy still managed to sneak by and almost fall through my porch construction zone. Neon Jack update 1 is coming next week!

June 30, 2014: First Playable Demo!

I demonstrated the game at the Stage Select Gaming Expo, this weekend. After incorporating some of the feedback I got, I'm now posting a playable demo. Check it out!

Please note that this is a very early prototype. You can drive around a track, and set a best lap time, but there aren't any other cars yet. You can use a wired Xbox controller (recommended) or keyboard. See the README in the download for keys/controls.
